Avoiding common behaviors that could jeopardize your divorce

You and your spouse may have decided to separate due to a myriad of reasons. Perhaps those reasons have left you feeling hurt, angry, confused, fearful, anxious and/or frustrated. It is completely normal for you to experience waves of intense emotion in the wake of a decision to divorce. However, it is important that you deal with these feelings in healthy ways. Failure to do so could cause you to risk the property settlement and/or child custody arrangements that you desire.

Nearly all Americans are familiar with the phenomenon of the breakup haircut. This occurs when in the wake of a breakup, an individual chooses to get a dramatic hair cut or color change. After you and your spouse have decided to divorce, you may be overwhelmed by the urge to act impulsively. Cutting your hair will likely not affect the outcome of your divorce. However, other impulsive behaviors certainly may.

For example, you may feel the urge to vent about your spouse, the divorce process or your kids in some way on social media. Please resist this urge. Your spouse’s attorney may check your social media accounts for activity that can be used against you in court. If you can temporarily suspend your social media accounts in order to get rid of temptation without feeling too cut off from your support networks, please do.

Other examples of poor impulsive behavior include spending sprees. Until your income and assets are ultimately divvied up in your property settlement, spending significant sums of money may look unfavorable and even illegal to a judge. When in doubt about how any potential decision could impact the outcome of your divorce, please contact your attorney.
